It has always made more sense to me to apply lyrics as downstream keys and I have used both for lyric overlays but the power of the upstream key is what makes this solution work.

In the Blackmagic design Atem software the upstream key is far more powerful than the downstream key. In this case we are going to use the upstream key. If you think of it like a river, the upstream key happens at the top of the river before the input switching happens while the downstream key is applied on top of the final video output. Keying is the process of making parts of the video transparent so it can be composited over other elements. When setting up the transparency it is possible to make blacks clear but dark greys semi-transparent. While it would be possible to use colours and use a Chroma key rather than a luma key, we found the elegance of simple white text on a black background worked. White text and Black BackgroundĪ simple black background is all that is needed. This very simple setup can be done with any slide presentation software from google slides, powerpoint, to more specialized programs like propresenter, easyworship and proclaim.
